Diflucan is a prescription drug that has been associated with many side effects in patients. Among the most commonly-reported incidents are abdominal pain, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing or breathing, a rapid decrease in blood pressure, itching, hives, and swelling of the face. While the afore-mentioned are less serious in nature, more severe side effects in patients using diflucan to treat yeast infections were also reported. These include seizures, convulsions, and substantial peeling and blistering of the skin that is accompanied by red skin rashes. Such reports are rare, but some patients also reported an allergic reaction while using diflucan. Such reactions created symptoms that included a sudden decrease in blood pressure, hives, and difficulty swallowing or breathing. Swelling of the lips, throat, and tongue, has been reported as well. Additional patients taking diflucan reported the appearance of yellow skin and loss of appetite.

Although less serious in nature, diflucan patients further reported side effects of an unpleasant taste in the mouth, bloating, headaches, and upset stomach. These rank among the most commonly-reported incidents, although such a list is not all-inclusive of diflucan’s potential side effects. Diflucan also has the potential to enter into breast milk, thus harming a nursing baby. Pregnant women, therefore, should not take this medication.

Diflucan comes in a tablet-form that is swallowed by patients. This antibiotic is used primarily in the treatment of vaginal infections caused by the yeast known as Candida. Diflucan also treats other fungal infections posed to such parts of the body as the blood, genital area, bladder, lungs, esophagus, throat, and mouth. People with compromised immune systems that result from AIDS or similar diseases, bone marrow transplants, cancer treatment, and other prescribed therapies also utilize diflucan for the remedy of fungal infections. Diflucan is a treatment used for several days and must be taken as prescribed. In some cases, patients experienced an improvement with their symptoms before the infection was totally treated. However, diflucan does not treat the flu or common cold, as these are viral infections.

Diflucan may interact negatively with other prescription drugs and thus create a multitude of side effects as described in this report. All medications, therefore, should be reported to a physician before starting treatment with diflucan. Both the benefits and potential for risks posed by diflucan should be considered by patient and doctor when faced with a fungal infection. The possibility of patient harm associated with such treatment is a very real concern. Some of the side effects reported by diflucan users are serious enough to prevent others from taking the drug. These same reports have also encouraged further medical study of diflucan and its ability to treat viral infections.

Staying educated about the prescription drugs that concern one and his or her health is the most proactive way to fight harmful side effects. Any treatment regimen should be accompanied by serious consideration involving the care provider and patient. Similarly, a complete medical history and examination should be conducted before taking diflucan. Diflucan is a drug similar to many others: it poses effective treatment but must be taken with caution.
